Threshold Detection Guide

Introduction to Threshold Detection

Threshold detection in Multicloud Observability Platform is used to monitor metrics and trigger alerts when certain thresholds are exceeded. This allows you to proactively identify and respond to potential issues in your system, ensuring optimal performance and reliability. By configuring threshold detection rules, you can set specific limits for various metrics and receive alerts when these limits are breached.

Steps to Create a Threshold Detection Configuration Rule

  1. Create a New Threshold Detection Rule:
  • Navigate to the "Monitoring" > "Monitors" section in the Multicloud Observability Platform dashboard
  • Click on the "Create" button to start creating a new threshold detection rule

  1. Define Tags:
  • Add or select relevant tags for the threshold detection for categorisation and easy identification

  1. Configure Detection Parameters:
  • Choose a suitable detection frequency and range
  • Choose the metrics that you want to monitor for threshold breaches. This could include system performance metrics, application metrics, or custom metrics

  1. Define Trigger Conditions:
  • Set the threshold values for the selected metrics. You can define limits and specify the conditions under which an alert should be triggered
  • Example: Trigger an alert if MySQL slow query count exceeds 20 within 5 minutes or if CPU usage exceeds 80%

  1. Set Alert Message:
  • Provide more information on the triggered alerts based on the defined thresholds. This can include the trigger conditions and actual value, etc.
  • Example: Trigger an alert if the CPU usage exceeds 80% for more than 5 minutes

Refer to the Event Notification Templates guide for more information on crafting alert messages using variables.

  1. Associate Alert Strategy and Dashboard:
  • Define the notification targets for the alerts triggered by the threshold detection rule This could include email, SMS, or third-party integrations (e.g., Slack) to the relevant parties
  • Define the dashboard that users can refer to when taking action for the alerts

  1. Save and Activate the Rule:
  • Review the threshold detection rule settings and make any necessary adjustments
  • Save the rule and activate it to start monitoring metrics based on the defined thresholds
